About Cosmetic Dental

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we get about our cosmetic dentistry services. If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call or send an email and our friendly team in Newcastle or Sydney will be happy to chat.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry encompasses any treatments designed to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile. Whereas general dentistry is focused on the overall health of your teeth and gums, cosmetic dentistry is all about giving you greater confidence to smile. Cosmetic dentistry should always have an emphasis on healthy teeth and gums, as this is the foundation to ensure any cosmetic dental treatments provide you with excellent long-term results.

How safe is cosmetic dentistry?

The key to quality cosmetic dentistry with excellent long-term results comes down to two things, experience and planning. Experience means your cosmetic dental clinic has a full range of options to improve your smile. This includes Invisalign, braces, teeth whitening, and porcelain crowns or veneers. If your dentist has only limited experience with all available treatment options, they may only have one way to treat your teeth which may not be the best solution for you or your smile.

If you're having braces or Invisalign, planning involves aligning your teeth safely within the structures of your jawbone and gum. Or if you're thinking about porcelain veneers, a properly planned smile design allows our dentists to only remove only the smallest amount of tooth to be removed when "prepping" your teeth. Even better, in a lot of situations with the right amount of pre-planning, you can do prepless veneers. This means we may not need to touch your teeth at all aside from a little polishing.

How much does cosmetic dentistry cost?

The cost for cosmetic dentistry varies greatly depending on what you're after. Simple teeth whitening can boost the colour and brightness of your teeth and is relatively inexpensive. If you have a few chips and rough edges with your teeth that are bothering you, these can be fixed with some straight-forward composite bonding or tooth reshaping.

Climbing up the ladder in terms of expense, classical orthodontic treatment with braces or the newer innovation of Invisalign can align crooked teeth and give you a straight, natural smile. Porcelain veneers (or crowns depending on your situation) sit at the top of the cosmetic dentistry tree. Veneers have the capacity to transform the colour, shape and length of your teeth to create your ideal smile.

What sort of issues can cosmetic dentistry fix?

Cosmetic dentistry can address issues with tooth alignment, using conventional orthodontic treatment or Invisalign. The colour, shape and length can be transformed with porcelain or composite veneers. And if you're after a simple boost to the colour and brightness of your teeth, teeth whitening is a simple yet effective way to achieve this.

Does insurance cover cosmetic dentistry?

Again, this all depends. Insurance may cover some aspects of cosmetic dental treatment such as orthodontic treatment or crowns (some people refer to these as "caps"), but there is usually either an annual or a lifetime limit. Porcelain veneers and teeth whitening may be covered by some health funds, but increasingly these treatments are not being covered with newer health insurance policies.

What's the difference between cosmetic and general dentistry?

General dentistry focuses on preventing and treating health issues with your teeth and gums, while cosmetic dentistry looks at the overall appearance of your teeth and smile. Before embarking on any cosmetic dental treatment, we always recommend having a complete checkup and clean to make sure you don't have anything that may become a future issue. Quality cosmetic dentistry is an excellent investment in time and money, and we always want to have excellent long-term results by making sure you have good general dental health.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the easiest way to give a boost to your smile and confidence. The main options are in-chair whitening, which can lift the colour of your teeth by up to 8 shades in a little over an hour. Or you can look into at-home whitening where we provide you with custom-fitted trays and whitening gel for you to whiten your teeth for an hour a day over a couple of weeks.

Smile Design

No two smiles are the same, and every smile design is unique in that it considers the individual features of your face, teeth and smile, as well as your ideal cosmetic dental goals. Smile design involves pre-planning the appearance your smile before you embark on your cosmetic dental journey. This allows our dentists to design a conservative treatment plan that is beneficial to the long-term health of your teeth. Most importantly, smile design allows you to preview your smile at the start of treatment, so you know what your final result will be and give you confidence in your treatment.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells of hand-made porcelain that are placed over your teeth to establish a new texture, a new shape, and a whiter colour. They can address a wide array of cosmetic dental issues such as cracked, chipped, worn, stained or discoloured teeth. Porcelain veneers are the gold standard in state of the art cosmetic dentistry, because they maintain their stunning aesthetics for a very long time with the right care . Their effectiveness, aesthetic appeal and longevity has made porcelain veneers the treatment of choice in creating beautiful, natural smiles.

Dental implants

Dental implants are the gold standard in modern dentistry for replacing teeth, whether you need to replace one tooth, several teeth, or a complete set of teeth. They are the gold standard because they are the most conservative, predictable option for replacing missing teeth with the greatest longevity. A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically placed into your jawbone underneath your gum. They provide the sturdy foundation for the permanent porcelain tooth or teeth that are secured to the dental implants after they have successfully healed (or fused with your jawbone).
